Prof. Zhiqiang Mao has recently been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society, an honor limited to at most 0.5% of APS members in any given year. Prof. Mao received this honor for “contributions to the understanding of magnetism and superconductivity in iron-based superconductors and correlated electron states in ruthenates”.

This March our group attended the APS March Meeting in Pittsburg, PA. Five of our group members presented contributed talks. Our undergraduate Erin Vehstedt gave her first talk entitled “Superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in Fe(Se(1-x)Tex)0.82” in a Iron Pnictides special session. In that same session Tijiang Liu gave a talk entitled “Superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in Fe(Se(1-x)Tex)y” and Zhiqiang Mao presented “Magnetic order and structural transition in BaFe2As2 and alpha-Fe(Se,Te)” for Wei Bao from Los Alamos who was unable to attend.

In the Special Session on Ruthenates we also presented three talks. Jin Peng presented a talk entitled “Antiferromagnetism and bulk spin-valve effect in Ca3(Ru(1-x)Tix)2O7“, David Fobes’s was entitled “Probing orbital-dependent magnetism in layered perovskite ruthenates through angle-dependent magnetoresistivity”, and Zhiqiang Mao presented on “Electronic phase diagram in double layered ruthenates (Sr(1-x)Cax)3Ru2O7“.

Finally, we would like to welcome our new PostDoc, Pramod Kumar who arrived in late February. He will soon have a CV posted here and a pictures of our group should be forthcoming.

Major Updates to the website

January 21st, 2009 Comments off

We have made major updates to the information on the website:

  • Our research interests have been updated under Research
  • Dr. Mao’s CV along with an updated version of his Complete CV have been added.
  • In addition we have updated the syllabi under Teaching.
  • The website has been moved to a new address. While the old address is still forwarding to the new address it would be advisable to update any bookmarks you may have.

In the near future we hope to update the other group members’ information under Our Group. In addition updates will be made to the About page as we have acquired new equipment since the previous update.

Pardon our dust

January 8th, 2009 Comments off

We are in the process of updating the website to a more concrete and easier to update version using WordPress. I hope to be done with the updates soon, but during this transition pardon the dust.

We also plan to make more announcements soon concerning what is going on in our group, like our participation in the upcoming APS March Meeting, recent publications, and a new group member.

David Fobes has just returned from the 58th Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany with focus on Physics.

The meeting was a week long conference of 24 Nobel Laureates and ~560 students from 67 countries chosen out of over 20,000 applicants.

Thanks to Tulane University for the nomination, Oak Ridge Associated Universities for the sponsorship, and to Sam Held at ORISE for all the support and planning that he provided the American Delegation. – David
In other news, this past March our group attended the APS March Meeting, held in New Orleans at the downtown convention center.

Small Updates, Equipment, Personnel

July 7th, 2007 Comments off

We have recently acquired a few new pieces of equipment, namely a Crucible Furnace and a Tube Furnace, both for expanding our crystal growth capabilities. We also have newly acquired a polarizing light microscope for further sample characterization. Soon we will have two visiting scholars with us as well to help expand our research into other related areas.

Published Paper and APS March Meeting

We recently had an article published in Physical Review B, Rapid Communication entitled “Competing magnetic fluctuations in Sr3Ru2O7 probed by Ti doping”. In about two weeks we will be attending the APS March Meeting in Denver. Dr. Zhiqiang Mao will give a talk entitled “In-plane anisotropy of magnetoresistivity of tri-layered ruthenate Sr4Ru3O10. Dr. Zhe Qu will give a talk entitled “Magnetic Phase Transition and Magnetic Structure of Ca3Ru2O7. David Fobes will give a talk entitled “Competing magnetic fluctuations in Sr3Ru2O7 probed by Ti doping”.

Updates

There have been major updates to this site. Specifically, the code was dramatically improved, and now should work on both internet explorer and firefox (it should also work on Opera and Safari, but I haven’t either to test it). I still recommend getting Firefox to view this site, since Internet Explorer tends to alter the formatting and change the general layout in some subtle ways.
